This week is Maternal Mental Health Awareness Week, which feels like the perfect time to talk about postpartum recovery and the pressure so many new mums feel in those early days.

In many cultures around the world, the postpartum period is protected as a time of rest and recovery. New mamas are encouraged to stay home and focus on healing and bonding with their newborns for anything from 20 days (in Mayan culture) to up to 100 days in Korea — with the understanding that the more time spent recuperating, the better.

In modern Western society, however, social media, limited support networks, work commitments and other influences often create a ‘bounce back’ culture.

New mums can feel pressure to get out and about and ‘back to normal’ far sooner than they might feel ready — and this can have a real impact on both physical recovery and maternal mental health.

It’s so important to remember that having a baby is a HUGE, life-changing event. If you’re ready to leave the house three days after giving birth, that’s absolutely fine — but taking time to rest, recover, and be looked after is just as valid (and often needed). There is no one-size-fits-all approach.

Good nutrition, listening to your body, prioritising rest, and asking for help when you need it are all essential for a strong and supported postpartum recovery — both physically and emotionally.

Planning your postpartum care before baby arrives can make a huge difference, especially when it comes to protecting your mental wellbeing.

Honestly? Every baby is different, and readiness is about developmental signs, not pressure, comparisons or outdated myths. 💜

You do not need to rush. You do not need to follow someone else’s timeline. And you do not need to do it perfectly.

Starting solids should feel calm, positive and responsive to your baby. ✨

My latest baby massage course finished today, and what a special group this has been. These amazing ladies created such a warm, honest and supportive space for one another from week one.

Week after week they showed up, shared openly, cheered each other on and lifted each other up through all the highs and challenges of new parenthood 💛

Watching those connections grow alongside your babies has been so lovely to see.

Parenting affirmations aren’t just nice words — they’re something we come back to again and again in class 🤍

Because being kind to ourselves, and reminding ourselves that we are all doing our best, really matters.

Holding boundaries and doing things your way isn’t always easy. Especially when people around you — even with the best intentions — try to share their opinions, advice or past experiences.

But when that starts to feel overwhelming or leaves you second-guessing yourself… it’s a sign to come back to what feels right for you.

It’s okay to hold those boundaries firmly.
It’s okay to parent in a way that aligns with your values.
It’s okay to do things differently.

You know your baby.
You know your family.
And you are doing an incredible job, even on the days it doesn’t feel like it 🤍

Save this for when you need a little reminder of how amazing you are!

Caesarean Awareness Month 💛

A caesarean birth doesn’t have to feel clinical or rushed… it can be calm, connected and truly yours.

A gentle caesarean is all about slowing things down – allowing your baby to be born gradually, giving you the chance to witness their arrival, discover who they are, and enjoy that all-important first cuddle with immediate skin-to-skin 🤍

It’s also about creating an environment that supports your birth hormones, helping to mimic elements of spontaneous labour and making the experience feel more personal and positive.

And here’s the bit more people need to hear 👇
✨ This is an option for everyone
✨ It’s your birth, your baby, your body

Not all hospitals routinely offer it, so having those conversations with your midwife and including it in your birth plan is key.

“I’d love to come but my baby cries a lot. What happens if they’re unsettled in class?!”

This is a worry I hear a lot from new parents.

And I get it!

It can feel daunting and even overwhelming dealing with an upset little person outside of the security and comfort of your home when all the tricks you have literally have to fit into your changing bag!

But honestly? It’s absolutely fine — and completely normal.

My classes are totally baby-led, which means feeding, cuddling, crying, wriggling, and napping are all welcome parts of the experience.

As a mum of 3 and an experienced primary school teacher, nothing phases me and I’m very much used to talking over noise!

These sessions are as much for you as they are for your little one — a chance to get out of the house, unwind, and connect with others in the same boat. Whether you manage the full routine or spend the hour soothing your baby, you’re still doing something wonderful for both of you.

Babywearing isn’t just cute — it’s intentional.
It keeps baby close, calm, and regulated…
and let’s be honest, it helps avoid the baby being passed around like a little hot potato.

Not every baby wants lots of different cuddles in one go.
And not every mum wants to spend the whole event asking for their baby back.

Sometimes, babywearing is the kindest way of saying:
“We’re so happy to be here… but baby is staying with me.”

And that should be respected —
no pressure, no guilt, no grabby hands.

Because babies aren’t party favours 🤍
